Been a while sense I've had time to write any new articles been so busy with commissioned work but I have to say I've missed it. Writting these howto articles helps me as much as I hope it helps those who read the articles. It makes me stop and think about the techniques I use everyday but have sort of taken for granted over the years. Taking a close look at techniques you use regularly helps you to improve on those techniques, grow as a airbrush artist. Ok onto airbrushing clouds.

There are dozens of techniques for airbrushing clouds this is but one of those. For this technique I use an Iwata HP-CS airbrush   one Scotch brite pad, over reduced House of Kolor base white. Any brand white will work just as long as you over reduce it making it more transparent than opaque. Add some of the same blue as your sky color and some dark gray to the list of required materials for this.

Step#1 – You need to separate the Scotch Brite pad down the center more or less. You want the pad it be half as thick or even less, so you can see thru it. I started using Scotch Brite pads because I have them around the shop all the time. Having tried using all sorts of different material to spray thru to create clouds the Scotch Brite pad I think gets the best results.

Pictures below: Using the over reduced white spray thru the Scotch Brite pad, hold your airbrush an inch or so from the Scotch Brite. Move the pad to cover the entire area you want clouds to appear in. Build your clouds up slowly, have fun with it.

If you over do an area of the clouds just go back and spray the same blue you used to create the sky. To add darker areas to the clouds use a over reduced dark gray.

Play around with this technique for creating clouds I believe if you take your time, build the clouds up slowly you’ll love the out come.

If you move the pad and spray thru it at the same time you can create movement in the clouds.
